What is Modem?

Modem or Modular-demodulator is a hardware device that helps us to modulate and demodulate the analog signals from coaxial wires, telephone wires, and other types of wiring to a digital signal for our computer or vice versa. A Modem can modulate more than one carrier wave to encode a digital signal for transmission The main goal of Modem is to easily transmit the data and encode it.

 History of Modem

History-of-Modem

In 1941 during World War 2 Allies country group developed a voice encryption system called SIGSALY which is used to encrypt the speech with a one-time pad and encoded the digital data with the use of tones using frequency-shift keying.

Commercially Modem was not available until the late 1950s when the rapid development of computer technology was asked for the solution to connect computers over large distances.

  How Modem Works?

How-Modem-Works

In today’s world, we cannot live without the Internet and If we look in our house then many devices work on the Internet. But the Internet in the wire comes in the analog signal and our computer and other devices understand digital signals. It is the same that you are a foreigner that doesn’t understand the language of native peoples of the country, there you need a translator for yourself. So who is the translator here Yes you’re right here we have Modem as the translator who translates or decodes analog signals to a digital signal and encodes digital signals from devices to analog signals?

The Modem receives signals from your Internet service provider through phone Lines, optical fibers and converts them to digital signals.  Your router and ISP can’t talk in the same language because they different signals.

          Speed of Modem

Speed-of-Modem

At early, Modems used the baud as a unit to measure Modem, but as the growth of technology increased the baud changed to bits per second (bps). The first commercial Modem supported the speed of 110 bps, which was used by the U.S Department of defense, some news channels, and some big companies.

                           Types of Modem

Types-of-Modem

There are different types of Modem that we use in Computer Networking which includes:

1) Dial-up Modem:- Dial-up-Modem is used to send analog signals via telephone wires. It is mostly used to make connections with Internet service providers.

2)   DSL Modem:-   DSL stands for “Digital subscriber Line ”.It is also known as Broadband Modem and it is used for better Internet connection.

3) ISDN Modem:-  ISDN stands for Integrated Service Digital Network and this type of Modem is used to provide communication standards for transfer data over the Internet.

4) Wireless Modem:- This Modem is also known as Radiofrequency Modem and it is used to work with the cellular network and wireless LAN.

Modem  Function

1) Data Compression:-  Data compression is a method by which Modem reduces the signal's size, which helps it send data in less time.

2) Flow Control:-  Flow control is a technique by which Modem slows down the fast signal by sending a ‘character’. It helps the slower Modem signal to cope up.

3) Error Correction:- In the Error correction method, it splits the information into smaller chunks called Frames. Then these frames are tagged with a checksum. The checksum is a technique to check redundancy in the present data. It all performed before sending data.

             Advantage and Disadvantage of Modem

Advantage of Modem:-

The modem has many advantages and some of them are as follows:-

1) Signal Conversion:- Modem is used to convert digital signal from the computer into the analog signal or vice versa. Because both ISP and computer speak a different language of communication.

2) Speed:- Speed of Modems were measured in baud. But now it is measured in bits/second bps. A faster Modem will cost you more. It posses high-speed transmission since telephone lines are used here.

3) Connection:- Modems are useful for connecting LAN with the Internet.

          Disadvantage of  Modem

With advantages, you should also know the disadvantage of everything. So here we have some disadvantages of Modem:-

1)  Slow Speed:- Modems are way slower when we compare them with the hub.

2) Malware Attack:- Modem makes you vulnerable to Malware attacks. Because of this reason, many Modem now comes with an in-built Firewall.

How to Connect LAN to TV

If you have broadband connection and TV at your home and if you want to connect them, then you can do it easily. You just need a LAN Modem to do this. Ensure that your tv has a LAN port on it. Just follow this simple step and don’t search this “How to connect LAN to TV” again.

STEP 1:- Connect the cable running out of the wall of your home to the port of the Modem. This is the threaded port, the same as the pain port on the TV set.

STEP 2:-   Now Plug the Ethernet cable into the output port on the Modem.

STEP 3:- Connect the same wire in the input port on the  Modem.

STEP4:- Now the Plug the Modem in the wall socket and switch it on. It generally takes some time.

STEP 5:- Now switch On your TV and using remote control look for LAN or Modem option on the input option.

STEP 6:- Link your computer with another LAN Ethernet cable and enjoy your Life.

Which Modem should you Buy?

Sometimes buyers get confused when he/she go to buy Modem so here we have some tips that you can follow when you go to buy new Modem. These tips will tell you about “Which is the best Modem” that you can buy.

1) Choose the Modem which suits your download speed.

2) Modem must have at least DOCSIS3.0 support.

3) Try to buy from new Modem companies like NETGEAR, ARRIS, or Motorola

4) If it is a Cable Modem then you have to buy Wi fi router too.

5) It should be cost-effective.

6) If it is a cable modem then you have to check whether the modem is compatible with your ISP or not.
